Barriers to Engagement
Barriers upon Barriers

What is this?

Sometimes citizen engagement is far from straightforward. This graphic is all about that.

Remember Jenny in the mini-story about the community safety? Go there. She has little experience or training on getting people involved. Without additional training or advice Jenny’s lack of knowledge becomes a barrier to meaningful engagement.

What is its use?

The diagram is food for thought. It’s a reminder that people trying to make things happen are sometimes part of the problem.

Barriers to engagement – pause for thought

This is where it gets a bit trickier.

For instance, the people you’re trying to engage may see you as being part of the problem.

So, you might need to work on two sorts of barriers.
There could be barriers between you and the people you’re trying to involve. There are also the barriers between the people and their being more fully engaged as citizens.
