Mayor of Caerphilly – Cllr. Mike Adams

The new Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Mike Adams, has unveiled his chosen charity of the year as The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

Mike accepted the position of civic head at the Annual General Meeting of Council held on Thursday 11th May. He has chosen Guide Dogs as the charity for his year in office, after supporting them individually for a number of years. He hopes that the people of the borough will join him and Gloria in 2023 – 24 by raising some of the funds necessary to breed, foster and train puppies to give more people with sight loss the confidence and support they need to live their lives independently and to the full.

Cllr Adams said “I really am honoured to be serving as the county borough’s Mayor for the forthcoming year, and together with my wife Gloria, look forward to representing the Caerphilly county borough and its citizens in the many and varied civic engagements that we hope the year ahead will bring. I also greatly look forward to meeting organisations and local residents who are making a real difference in their communities.”

Having worked at South Wales Switchgear from 1966 to 1992, Mike became a mature student, completing a BA degree in Geography and European Studies where he graduated at 2:1 level in 1996.

Since then he has worked in a variety of roles, including a short stint in self-employment, temporarily for Wales Labour Party, then back in engineering and finally as a civil servant. It was during this latter period that Mike stood as a Labour candidate in Pontllanfraith and was elected to Caerphilly County Borough Council in 2004; he has continued to represent residents of the Pontllanfraith ward ever since. Mike retired from employment in 2017.

Married to wife Gloria for 50 years, together they have two sons. Having played rugby and cricket at school, Mike remains a keen sports fan, and, when not carrying out his duties representing constituents, can often be found watching football. He also enjoys reading (particularly political thrillers) and weekend hikes in the local countryside.

The Mayor welcomes invitations to attend events held by local organisations. Please contact the Mayor's Office for further information. It may not be possible for the Mayor to attend every event but if the Mayor is available, you will be contacted in good time.
