Voter ID

From 4 May 2023, voters in Wales will need to show photo ID to vote at polling stations in some elections. This will apply to:

• Police and Crime commissioner elections
• UK Parliamentary by-elections
• Recall petitions

From October 2023, it will also apply to UK General elections.

Voters in Wales will not need to show photo ID to vote at a polling station at Senedd elections or local council elections.

Accepted forms of ID include:

• a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport;
• a UK, EEA or Commonwealth drivers’ licence;
• and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass or an Oyster 60+ card.

Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

If you don’t have accepted photo ID

You can apply for a free voter ID document known as a Voter Authority Certificate, if:

• you do not have accepted photo ID,
• you no longer look like the photo on your ID,
• the name on your photo ID is different to your name on the electoral register.

You need to register to vote before applying for a Voter Authority Certificate.
