Lighting technology continues to benefit the environment

Caerphilly County Borough Council has to date replaced over 8,200 traditional street lights with more energy efficient LED lanterns.

To date the programme has seen impressive environmental benefits, including a major reduction in white light emissions and sky glow.  The change from low pressure sodium to LED has also saved 2,100,000 kWh of electricity which saves approximately £220,000 per year. The new street lights have also resulted in 900 Tonnes less CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere each year.

The replacement programme is continuing, with a further 1,250 street lights to be changed by late November this year. This will see a further 225,500kWh being saved resulting in a financial saving of a further £27,000.00 each year.

Cllr. Tom Williams, cabinet Member for Highways, Transportation and Engineering said: “I am pleased the Caerphilly county Borough Council continues to commit to replacing traditional lighting columns with new LED technology. The environmental benefits and financial savings the changeover programme is achieving is fantastic news for residents across the entire county borough.”
