Velvet Coalmine Festival 2017

September 7 to 16, Blackwood

Velvet Coalmine is thrilled to welcome a host of stars to Blackwood for the 2017 festival.

Wales Sports Personality of the Year and double Olympic Taekwon-do Champion Jade Jones MBE heads a bill that also includes our festival partners ‘Africa Writes’ who bring their writers to Wales for the very first time.

With spoken word brilliance from the amazing ‘Tongue Fu’, a host of top Comedians, science presenter from BBC1’s The One Show Marty Jopson, a one-act Theatre competition, Cardiff’s Firefly Press, a fantastic array of workshops, performers and writers including our writer-inresidence Rachel Long and of course, Blackwood’s very own singing sensations ‘Into the Ark’ we have a line-up that is full of quality and diversity and is set to light up Blackwood over 10 days in September.

Events will take place in various location including Blackwood Little Theatre, Blackwood Library, local schools, Crosskeys College, Blackwood Methodist Church, The Sirhowy and Costa Coffee.

Our charity partner for 2017 is Gwent Children’s Diabetes Fund and the ‘Into the Ark’ concert on Friday September 8th will double up as a fundraiser for this fantastic cause. Our sincere thanks to Dane and Taylor for supporting the festival in what has been fantastic year for them both since they captivated Blackwood and the rest of the nation on The Voice!

Our 5-year Title Sponsorship with Blackwood Town Council has been invaluable for growing the festival and the Council deserve immense credit for their belief and conviction in backing this event and its benefit to Blackwood. Additional thanks must also go to Caerphilly County Council via their Community Regeneration Fund which has enabled us to bring Africa Writes to Blackwood.
