>Two worthwhile charities have received a major cash boost thanks to the fundraising efforts of last year's Mayor of Caerphilly county borough council.
The former Mayor, Cllr Allen Williams, selected Cancercareline and St David's Foundation Hospice Care to benefit from the fundraising activities held during his 12 months in office.
A special cheque presentation took place at the new Penallta House council HQ this week when Cllr Williams handed over a total of nearly £18,000 to representatives of the two charities.
Cancercareline and the St David's Foundation Hospice Care each received £8,476.41 and the recipients were delighted with the generous donation.
"I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to my appeal over the last year," said Cllr Allen Williams "These two excellent charities carry out invaluable work in our communities and I know that this money will be put to good use helping those most in need."
Cancercareline is based in Blackwood and was founded in 1985. It supports many clients, carers, friends and family who have or who cares for someone who is affected by cancer.
St David's provides hospice care to over 2,400 people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Over the last 27 years they have cared for tens of thousands of families across Gwent.
