Caerphilly county borough will welcome super-cyclist Mark Cavendish later this month, after it was announced he will be part of the HTC squad taking part in the Tour of Britain.

Cavendish, who has previously won 20 stages of the Tour de France, last competed in the Tour of Britain in 2007, when he won the opening two stages.

The Welsh stage of the Tour of Britain will conclude in Caerphilly on Wednesday 14th September.

Cllr Allan Pritchard, Leader of the Council said, "We would love to see thousands of local people lining the route to cheer on the competitors, and to have riders of the calibre of Mark Cavendish participating really adds to the occasion".

He continued, "I would encourage everyone to go along and show their support on the day and showcase Caerphilly county borough to the millions of people who will be following this major sporting event".

The Welsh stage of the Tour of Britain will enter Caerphilly county borough in Nelson at approximately 2pm on Wednesday 14th September. The cyclists will then travel through Tredomen, Ystrad Mynach and Llanbradach, along Pontygwindy Road and into Caerphilly town centre, before a gruelling climb to the top of Caerphilly Mountain. They will then travel back into Caerphilly town centre, for the stage finale at Caerphilly Castle.

The final Tour of Britain start list will be announced on the evening of Saturday 10 September.
