Work will start within weeks on a new multi million pound retail development in Bargoed boasting what has been described as a 'store of the future'.
Morrisons is to create a 56,000 sq. ft. anchor store on a development plateau in the heart of the town centre. The new store will incorporate Morrisons full range of goods and services. It will also bring to Bargoed the latest Morrisons interior layout, one of the first to be rolled out in Wales.
This exciting new concept includes all the food departments, facilities and product choice that make up their current fresh food offer, but displayed and presented in a very exciting new way, bringing together the best innovations in fresh produce retail from the UK, and the latest ideas from the US and Canada.
The Morrisons development will be complemented by a variety of mixed-use retail units of 20,500 sq. ft. together with a 400 space car park.
Representatives from Caerphilly county borough council, Morrisons and Simons Developments ltd met at Penallta House council offices in Ystrad Mynach this week to announce that works will start on the exciting new development on Monday March 12th.
"We are delighted to announce that it's 'all systems go' for the scheme," said Cllr Ron Davies, CCBC cabinet member for Regeneration. "This is fantastic news for Bargoed and I'm sure the whole community will join us in celebrating this landmark occasion."
CCBC will now be seeking tenants for the retail units on the development and advertising boards will soon be erected on-site with more information.
The retail development is 'Phase 1' of the regeneration scheme. It will be followed by a second phase, consisting of the construction of a new multiplex cinema at the site, which was recently announced by Caerphilly county borough council thanks to a £5million commitment from the authority.
"It's great to see that our plans to breathe new life into Bargoed are moving forward and the scheme is finally becoming a reality," added Cllr Ron Davies.
Speaking on behalf of Morrisons, development executive Mark Thompson said, "We are delighted to be involved with this regeneration project. We are committed to bringing to local people all the benefits that make us different from the rest. Our unique offer of high quality, fresh food at great prices, much of which is made in store, is what makes us stand out against our competitors."
He continued, "The new Morrisons store will create much needed new local jobs with excellent training and development opportunities targeted squarely at local people. Employing a local workforce that is reflective of the communities we serve has been an intrinsic part of our success story for many years."
The Welsh Government has been instrumental in providing funding the various elements of the scheme and the wider regeneration of Bargoed.
Housing, Regeneration and Heritage Minister Huw Lewis said, "Town centre renewal is a key priority for this Welsh Government and I am delighted to support this development with partnership funding from our 'Heads of the Valleys' Regeneration Area programme. This retail space will help breathe new life into Bargoed town centre, support new and existing businesses, stimulate the local economy and provide jobs in the retail sector."
A major event was held in Penallta House recently when local businesses were invited to tender for contracts of all sizes linked to the scheme.
Graeme Cosgrove, Development Director at Simons Developments ltd commented, " We are delighted to have reached this important milestone which is a testament to the commitment and tenacity shown by all of the parties involved in this project over a number of years. We look forward to working with Caerphilly County Borough Council and Morrisons over the coming months to deliver a new development that the people of Bargoed and the wider community can be proud of."
