Five schools from across Caerphilly County Borough Council will be competing to reach the Welsh Athletics Finals this week.
Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, Newbridge High School, St Cenydd Comprehensive, Rhymney Comprehensive and Lewis School Pengam, will all be competing at the Glamorgan Valleys Athletics Finals, at Michael Sobell Leisure Centre Aberdare.
The students will compete in track and field events including relay, sprints and long jumps.
The winning teams from each age category will represent the Glamorgan Valleys at the Welsh Finals in Cwmbran on March 4th, the winners of which will represent Wales at the UK championships.
Whilst the secondary schools compete against the rest of Wales, Caerphilly CBC primary schools will be participating in an Olympic Themed Swimming Gala.
The Gala held at Newbridge Leisure Centre, is in its second year, and this year even more schools will be participating.
Children aged 10 and 11 from Rhydri, Plasyfelin, Phillipstown, St Gwladys, Libanus, Cwm Gwyddon, Crumlin, Cwm Carn, Ty Sign, Tyn-Y-Wern, Abercarn and Maes y Cwmmer, will all compete for Gold, Silver or Bronze.
Councillor Phil Bevan, Cabinet Member for Education, Lifelong Learning and Leisure had some words of encouragement, "I wish all the pupils competing the best of luck, they are making the county borough proud, by showcasing our sporting talent. But more importantly I hope they all enjoy themselves."
