Cefn Fforest Primary celebrate sporting success

    Inspired by the London 2012 Olympics, Cefn Fforest Primary School have had a successful sporting year. So far this year teams have reached podium positions in a number of sporting activities.

    Headteacher, Mrs Farmer said, "As a school we facilitate many after school clubs, and our success this year shows the dedication of both staff and pupils to their sporting endeavours."

    The Urdd National Eisteddfod is held in high regard by the school as a compettion of sporting excellence and Cefn Fforest Primary School have competed in a number of the events and competitions this year. In February, Mrs Ceri James and Miss Sam James both took dance troops to the regional competitions held at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni. Both troops danced fantastically, with the creative dance team trained by Mrs James winning through to the Eisteddfod.

    More Urdd success followed with the Girls football team coached by Mr Lloyd Stone, winning the regional competition and have since represented the county borough in the all Wales Finals in May. The team travelled to Cwmbran for the Regional Tournament, winning 5 out of their 6 games, scoring 13 goals and only conceding 1 in the process.

    Elleciah Holton, team captain said, "When we won the trophy we were all very happy and excited. The girls played fantastically to win and get through to Aberystwyth. It was a great day."

    The Boys Football Team also coached by Mr Stone, has enjoyed similar success this year. The team became North Islwyn champions, winning the league by 9 points and were then crowned champions of Caerphilly after a playoff involving the 5 different league winners within the county borough.

    Pupil Ross Powell said, "At times we thought we were going to lose when playing against the other league winners but we kept our spirits up and won it!"

    Cllr Rhianon Passmore, Cabinet Member for Education congratulated the school, "Cefn Fforest have really shown their Olympic spirit. Well done to all those who have competed and good luck to those still to compete."

    The school Netball team run by Mrs Ceri James, the Year 3 teacher, produced a superb effort in their North Islwyn League campaign. They were narrowly beaten into second place by Rhiw-Syr-Dafydd, with only one point separating them.

    With Athletics, Cricket and Tennis competitions on the horizon, Cefn Fforest Primary are hoping for continued success.
