>A long-established coach firm based in the Caerphilly county borough has become the first business in the area to offer specialist training to help local drivers gain an essential new qualification.
Howells Coaches Ltd have become approved training providers for courses linked to the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DriverCPC) - a new qualification for drivers entering the lorry and bus industries which they must complete in order to drive professionally.
Howells is a family-run business operating from depots in Deri and Ystrad Mynach. A new training centre has been developed at the Ystrad Mynach site to deliver the new courses and the firm is delighted to diversify into a new branch of business.
"We are well aware of the impact the new DriverCPC legislation will have and we understand that many drivers will be apprehensive about returning to the classroom, " said Donna Howells, Director, "We want to reassure drivers that the course will build on their existing knowledge and improve the skills they already possess. Our professional trainers are on hand to ensure the course is enjoyable and informative for all involved."
Caerphilly county borough council has worked closely with the firm over the years and has provided a range of financial support. Staff from the authority visited the new training centre recently to view the facilities and celebrate the official opening.
Melanie Phillips from the council's economic development team said, "Howells is an important local employer and the business has gone from strength to strength. It's encouraging to see the team diversify the business even further and we wish the firm the best of luck with this new venture in the future."
