Three Caerphilly county borough families have been learning about budgeting and healthy eating, with help from Caerphilly County Borough Council's The Hub team recently.

The families, from the Cefn Fforest area, participated in an educational shopping trip at the local Sainsburys, which focussed on educating families on budgeting and healthier eating while carrying out their weekly shop.

Cllr Phil Bevan, Cabinet Member for Education, Leisure and Lifelong Learning said, "This initiative aimed to assist families in learning to prepare healthier, wholesome meals while keeping to a budget".

He continued, "I am sure the families involved have gained some useful tips, and they will continue to work with The Hub Team to gain further knowledge and new skills around healthy eating over the coming weeks"

After the educational shopping trip, the families took part in a cookery workshop, facilitated by Taste Buddies.

The aim of this part of the initiative was to help educate families on cooking on a budget, by teaching them to be able to prepare quick and easy healthy family meals on a budget.

The families had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by learning how to prepare simple, healthy meals such as shepherds pie using the ingredients they used purchased earlier on in the day.

One of the mums who took part in the project said, "The whole initiative has been really useful. I have learned a lot about how to budget and find better alternatives to what I would normally buy while doing my weekly shop. I now often look for the cheaper and healthier options".
