Caerphilly girl Fiona May Murphy is the new Girls Under 13s British Squash Champion, after a magnificent performance at the Technifibre British National Championships in Manchester.

Fiona scooped the top title when she beat the No1 seed and pre-tournament favourite, Millie Pughe of Yorkshire, in a final where Fiona scored 9-4, 6-9, 9-1, 9-3 in a vibrant 42 minutes of play.

Fiona, who attends St.Martin’s Comprehensive, and trains at Caerphilly Leisure Centre Squash Club, is the first Welsh winner of a British Squash title since Natalie Pritchard won the Girls Under 15 event in 2004.

Cllr. David Hardacre, Cabinet Member for Education & Leisure said, “It is wonderful how much sporting talent we have here in the Caerphilly county borough, and there are amazing opportunities for young people to develop in their chosen interests. Well-done Fiona.”
