Caerphilly County Borough Council is celebrating the success of one of its flagship parks with the announcement of Green Flag Award status being awarded to Waunfawr Park in Crosskeys.
The park, which boasts bowling, cricket, football and rugby facilities, as well as a Multi Use Games Area and local cycle route, was selected for the award having been deemed by the judges to be welcoming, clean and well maintained, with the support and involvement of the local community.
Cabinet member for the environment, Cllr Lyn Ackerman said, "The fact that Waunfawr Park has been granted this prestigious award is testimony to the hard work that has and will continue to take place to maintain the park's excellence and beauty.
My congratulations and thanks go not only to officers whose job it is to keep the park well maintained, but also to the many volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure that Waunfawr Park and indeed other parks and open spaces throughout the Caerphilly county borough are welcoming and attractive places to visit."
The park, which welcomes thousands of visitors each year, also boasts an impressive community garden/forest school, which provides an active learning environment for its many users, which include Waunfawr Primary School and Brooklands Day Centre.
The community garden also features a large greenhouse, allotment plots, a wildlife pond, various raised flower planters and barbecue facilities. Caerphilly County Borough Council have also recently installed the Gold medal winning show garden that was displayed at the 2007 RHS show in Cardiff.
The Green Flag Award is a national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. The award scheme began in 1996 as a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country. It was also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards, creating a benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas.
