The whole country is gearing up for the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Caerphilly county borough youngsters were no exception earlier this week when they had the chance to take part in an exciting aquatics programme!
Jeremy Rowe, Leisure Services Manager at Caerphilly County Borough Council said, "The driving force behind our aquatics programme has been to help make the public, children, schools and communities aware that swimming is not just a sport but a skill for life regardless of age, gender or ability. The Caerphilly School Swimming programme provides all pupils in the borough with the opportunity to receive intensive swimming lessons delivered by qualified instructors. This project has already been a real success and has achieved the award of the 'Inspire Mark', which we are very proud of."
The 'Inspire' programme focuses on six key themes: sport, culture, education, sustainability, volunteering and business opportunities and skills, and is awarded to projects that are inspired by the London 2012 Olympics and will leave a lasting legacy in their community.
During the Easter holiday period, Caerphilly Leisure Centre has been providing aquatic opportunities to the residents of Caerphilly county borough. As part of promoting Caerphilly Leisure Centre's extensive Learn to Swim programme which links to the Caerphilly School Swimming Project, free swimming lessons have been provided for both beginners and improvers. The free lessons have proved extremely popular with over 50 children taking part.
Aquatics of course represents more than just swimming, an example of this is the free canoeing sessions that have been provided at Bedwas Leisure Centre. This fantastic activity has been very well received with all who participated having a great time. So fingers crossed it's only a matter of time before Caerphilly county borough is providing a conveyor belt of Olympic talent!
