Thousands of people are expected to converge on Caerphilly this weekend (Saturday 26th May) to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay and enjoy the other major events taking place in the town centre throughout the day.
Blue Peter will also be in town for a live outside broadcast - the first stop on their Big Olympic Tour. The action will take place on Owain Glyndwr Sports Field at the rear of Caerphilly Castle. As well as the Blue Peter roadshow, the crew from Horrible Histories will be on hand to take people back in time to discover how the Olympics began!
Anthony O'Sullivan, CCBC Chief Executive said, "Caerphilly is definitely the place to be this weekend. We've got the Olympic Torch passing in the shadow of our magnificent castle and we've also got a wealth of other events and attractions to keep the whole family happy. It's great to see that the Caerphilly county borough is attracting these major high profile events, especially following the recent announcements about the return of the BBC Proms and the Tour of Britain cycle race this year."
The Olympic Torch enters Caerphilly town centre at approx 9.50am on Saturday 26th May and residents are being urged to come along to line the streets and enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity.
The Olympic Torch bearers will enter Watford Road / St Martin's Road and will proceed through the town centre along Cardiff Road, Castle Street and Nantgarw Road. It is anticipated that the torch will leave Caerphilly, via Nantgarw Road by 10:30am.
A special 'Olympic Park' will also be located at the site, where residents can try their hand at a selection of Olympic Sports and activities. SBX - the UK and Europe's leading urban entertainment experience - will be on hand to showcase stars from the world of Basketball, Football, BMX, Skateboard, MCs/Beat Boxing, Free Running, Street Dance and Break Dancing.
Food lovers can browse the stalls at the Food Festival taking in the sizzling sounds, delicious smells, and tongue tingling tastes through the town centre. (Cardiff Road, Pentrebane Street, Twyn Road and Castle Street will be closed between midnight Friday 25th May and 10pm Saturday 26th May) Stalls, cookery demonstrations and children's activities will fill the day with fun.. This event is being part-funded by the Welsh Government.
Finally, the annual Flower Festival will see Caerphilly bursting with brilliant blooms and dazzling displays bringing vibrant colour to venues across Caerphilly Town Centre.
