More than 130 sporting volunteers from across the county borough were recognised at a prestigious awards evening at Bryn Meadows Golf and Country Club recently.

Caerphilly County Borough Council's Sports Development team hosted the event as a thank you for all the volunteers and coaches who work on numerous sporting activities across the area.

As part of National Volunteering Week, the event was a very important date on the Sports Development calendar as it recognises the vital contribution that volunteers make to the success of Sports Development Programmes. Last year more than 80,000 young people took part in sporting activities hosted by the Sports Development Team, many of which were a great success thanks to the support of these volunteers.

The night culminated in the presentation of the CCBC Sports Development Young Volunteer of the Year and Volunteer of the Year Awards. The 2008 Young Volunteer award went to Richard Key, for his commitment and dedication to the Swimming Development programme across the authority. Anthony Palmer was the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award, primarily for his continued support of the rugby development programme, but also for his dedication and commitment to encouraging young people to become physically active.

The Sports Development Team recognise that volunteers are crucial to the success of all sporting activities. Although the team only had a chance to say thank you to those who work on their programme, they would also like to thank all those volunteers out there running sports and community activities, because without volunteers it wouldn't happen.

If you are interested in getting involved in Sports Development activities please contact the team on 01443 863186.
