The Black and Minority Ethnic Young Achievers Awards 2008

    Young black and minority ethnic people in Caerphilly County Borough are set to showcase their diverse range of talents in their fourth annual awards ceremony.

    The Black and Minority Ethnic Young Achievers Awards 2008, which takes place on Wednesday 19 th March 2008 in a special celebration evening at Lewis School, Pengam, will reward 11 to 25 year olds from varied cultural and racial backgrounds in the county borough for excellence in a variety of fields.

    Awards ceremonies in previous years have been a resounding success – Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for the environment said, "these awards are a wonderful way of showcasing the rich diversity of our county boroughs' multi-cultural society, and the wonderful talents they have."

    Top and runner up prizes of £100 and £50 respectively will be given in the following categories: Student of the year, volunteer of the year, musician of the year, artist of the year , cultural achievement, greatest endeavour, contribution to the community , academic achievement, and sporting achievement (male and female) The overall winner of the "Young Achiever Of The Year Award" will receive a further prize sponsored by The Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough.

    Council leader, Cllr Harry Andrews said, "Every year the event is a very impressive reminder for me that all human talents, commitment, endeavour, willingness to learn and ambition to achieve are shared by all people, regardless of their background or creed. Compassion and intelligence is what defines us as human beings, and those qualities, above all are what unite us as members of the human race."

    The event is being organised by VALREC (Valleys Race Equality Council) in association with Caerphilly County Borough Multi-Agency Forum (MAF) for Equality Against Harassment.

    The forum comprises representatives from such bodies as Caerphilly County Borough Council, Gwent Police, Caerphilly Local Health Board and Gwent Probation, Citizens Advice Bureau, Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations.

    It is committed to stamping out racism by educating people and informing them of the issues surrounding racial discrimination.

    Nominations for these awards are currently taking place with the closing date for nominations being 31st January 2008.
