    Maesycwmmer

Hundreds of residents from Maesycwmmer turned out to find out about plans to improve traffic congestion in the village this week during a special information event.

Funding has been sought from the Welsh Government for a major new highway improvement scheme at the A472 signal control junction in Maesycwmmer.

Terry Shaw, Head of Engineering at the council said, "We are keen to ensure that residents are kept fully informed about the proposals and we were delighted with the high turnout throughout the day. Maesycwmmer experiences significant congestion at peak times, which will only worsen with the increase in vehicles in the future. The proposed works will not only improve traffic flow through the village, but also improve the pedestrian crossings, bus stops and safer parking."

Once funding is confirmed it is intended to commence the construction in late summer 2012 for a period of approximately eight months. The specific dates and times will be confirmed over the next few months.

Historically, the junction at the traffic lights has been a congestion bottleneck, especially at morning and afternoon peak times. The A472 is a key strategic route and at present around 23,000 vehicles pass through the village each day.

The completion of the nearby Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr hospital development and national annual traffic growth, together with future proposed developments means that vehicle numbers are forecast to rise significantly in the future. It is expected that this number will rise to 28,000 vehicle per day by 2025.
