Caerphilly county borough council set the lowest council tax increase in Wales at a meeting last night (Thursday 5th March)
Councillors agreed to a rate of 2.35% for 2009/10 in a move that will be welcomed by the community.
The authority failed to reach an agreement at a meeting last week, but councillors have now settled on a compromise and set a budget that will identify key savings while protecting vital frontline services to the public.
Deputy leader of council, Cllr Colin Mann welcomed the announcement, "This budget is about making sure that we provide good quality essential services to the people of our county borough. At the same time we are acutely aware of the financial pressure that so many of our residents are under and have kept the rise to the absolute minimum."
"I am pleased that councillors from the two main political parties have been able to work together and agree a way forward that is in the best interests of the authority and local residents.
"We are living in extremely difficult times and we needed to set aside party politics and work together as a team. The ability to work together will make Caerphilly standout from other areas and make us the first choice for prudent investors and home-grown talent. It is entirely possible to make this happen and build a better county borough for all our people," he added.
