>Budding Bothams and fledgling Flintoffs in Risca can now fine tune their cricketing skills with the help of a brand new bowling machine.
Risca Community Comprehensive School has secured funding through the Community Focused Schools inititaive to purchase the impressive equipment and it is already being put to good use by the pupils.
Risca Community Comprehensive School has established a Management Board which includes a number of services who provide opportunities for children and young people. Through this board the school, leisure centre and 5x60 programme made a joint application and secured funding to purchase the cricket bowling machine, as well as new matting for the sports hall. The pupils of Risca Community Comprehensive School have also been enjoying coaching sessions with the help of local club, Abercarn Cricket Club.
The investment means that the indoor training facilities for cricket are available to the school and to public who now have the additional option of hiring the bowling machine when using the cricket nets at the leisure centre. It is hoped that in the year to come other schools and local clubs will use the facility for training.
Cllr. Phil Bevan, Cabinet Member for Education and Leisure visited the school for the launch of the new equipment and said, "We are keen to provide the best sporting facilities for our schools and communities and this is the latest in a series of exciting schemes across the county borough. The partnership working between a number of different services has created this fantastic opportunity for the school pupils and the local community".
The Community Focused Schools initiative is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
