Pupils from Lewis School Pengam are celebrating, having scooped a fantastic national award at the Pearson Teaching Awards 2011.
Young people from the school came first in the prestigious 'Film My School' competition at the UK Panel Pearson Teaching Awards 2011, having produced a film to convey why they feel their school is a great place to be!
Pupils were presented their award, along with Deputy Headteacher Chris Parry at a televised awards ceremony recently.
Chris Parry, on winning the award said, "Lewis School Pengam is a fantastic school. It is full of extraordinary young people and extraordinary staff. And days like this make it all worthwhile".
The winning film, which is directed by GCSE media student Liam Gough, has a strong message 'Learning should be fun – this is how it's done".
The film illustrates learning through experiments in a lab, learning by keeping the mind and body alert in the gym and learning by doing, which shows an outdoor history class all dressed up as Crusaders!
Meanwhile, there's an unforgettable soundtrack by sixth form music student Nathan Battersby, who sings and plays acoustic guitar in front of the whole school. He's even written a love song with an educational twist, ending with the line 'It's going to be fun finding out'.
Cllr Phil Bevan, Cabinet Member for Education, Leisure and Lifelong Learning said, "The pupils and teaching staff at Lewis School Pengam should feel extremely proud of winning this prestigious award, which gives an insight into what daily life is like at the school. They have done not only themselves proud, but they've also really helped to put Caerphilly county borough on the map on a national scale".
As part of their prize, the school will also receive the top prize of £5,000, plus a gold Plato – education's symbol of excellence.
