A major 12 month construction scheme to create a new access road into the new Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr hospital site in Ystrad Mynach is due to start next week.
The project is the first part of a phased scheme to improve the road network at a key strategic crossroads in the heart of the Caerphilly county borough.
The first phase of works will involve construction of direct access into the new hospital site comprising a new river bridge and junction off the northbound carriageway of the A469 dual carriageway, just south of the A469/A472 Cwm Du roundabout near the New Cottage Dance Centre.
Contractors Carillion PLC are currently setting up their site offices in the area and it is anticipated that works on the A469 will commence on Monday 9th February. In association with the works to narrow the width of the existing north and southbound carriageway and single lane closures during off-peak periods, the speed limit on this length of the A469 will be reduced to 40mph along with prohibition of cyclists.
During March and April 2009 works to divert a water main will require the weekend closure of the A469 and alternate routes will be signed at that time.
Due to the strategic importance of this location, and the high volume of daily traffic, there will inevitably be some disruption to motorists.
Cabinet member for transportation, Cllr Rob Gough, said, "These major works are closely linked to the development of this exciting hospital project. We appreciate that there will be inconvenience as the scheme progresses, but I'm sure everyone can recognise that it is worth some short term pain for the benefit of positive long term gain."
Caerphilly county borough council is appealing to the public to be patient and, where possible, explore options to help ease congestion such as finding alternative routes, using public transport or car sharing etc.
The project has been designed in partnership by Capita Symonds and the council's Engineering Consultancy. The improvements are funded through a combination of money from Gwent Healthcare Trust and a Welsh Assembly Government Transport Grant.
