>Five comprehensive schools in the Caerphilly county borough have enrolled pupils in hockey sessions provided by the council's 5x60 initiative.
Last year the authority's Hockey Club Development Officer, Bev Rogers, signed three schools up for her hockey programme (Blackwood Comprehensive, Cwmcarn High and Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni).
This year another five comprehensive schools have joined the successful scheme, making hockey the third most popular sport provided through the 5x60 scheme.
Over recent months 158 boys have participated in the hockey sessions across the county borough, and as a result a new boys hockey club will commence at Sue Noake Leisure Centre in Ystrad Mynach this September.
Cllr Phil Bevan, Cabinet Member for Education and Leisure, said, "Our 5x60 officers work extremely hard to ensure that a variety of activities are available for all pupils to enjoy. The team's top priority is to create appealing activities and sporting opportunities to encourage more young people to become more active, more often. Hockey has definitely proved to be one such sport."
