Ninety reception class pupils from Ysgol Y Llawnt, Upper Rhymney and Bryn Bach Primary schools attended a special 'Teddy Bear's Picnic' at the Coed Bryn Oer Plant woodland site adjacent to Parc Bryn Bach, north of Rhymney.
The pupils, accompanied by a Teddy Bear Mascot, were entertained by a story teller, made wands and crowns from willow stems, took part in Teddy Bear games and bush tucker fruit trials. After the activities, each school planted a tree with their Teddy Bear Mascot.
The event was organizsed by Caerphilly County Borough Council's Countryside Ranger Service as a part of the Welsh Government's PLANT initiative. This aims to plant a tree for every child born or adopted in Wales from 1st January 2008 to help create a Welsh National forest of native trees. It is being delivered on behalf of the Welsh Government by Coed Cadw / The Woodland Trust and the Forestry Commission Wales.
Throughout Wales the Welsh Government aims to plant around 32,000 trees every year enough to cover about 44 Rugby pitches. The Coed Bryn Oer site, is owned by Caerphilly County Borough Council.
In previous years older children from these three schools had taken part in planting events at this site helping to plant some of the 51,000 young trees planted on this site as part of the PLANT initiative.
Photographs were taken of the tree planting and each school will be given a copy of the photograph, as a memento, framed in a bespoke crafted wooden frame.
