A dedicated group of people who are always on hand through wind, rain and snow to help young children cross the road in safety have been recognised for their efforts.
School Crossing Patrol staff carry out a crucial role in the community ensuring local pupils get to school safely. The local 'lollipop lady' (or man) has become a fixture outside the school gates and some long serving members of staff have helped generations of children cross busy roads.
A special event was held at Llancaiach Fawr Manor House in Nelson recently to celebrate the work of the team. Awards for long service and voluntary work were handed out to key staff who have gone that extra mile in their jobs.
CCBC cabinet member for transportation and planning, Cllr Rob Gough said "It was a very successful event that provided us with a great opportunity to reward and recognise this loyal workforce. Thousands of pupils benefit from their services each day and we wanted to emphasise the importance of the team in our road safety provision."
A special 'walk to school' award was also presented to Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Caerffili for their commitment and enthusiasm to the walking bus scheme over the past 5 years.
The council's road safety team is involved wide range of events and activities across the area to raise awareness about road safety. The team works in the heart of the community in schemes such as:
Kerbcraft – An innovative road safety scheme that has seen over 4,000 primary school age pupils learn lifesaving lessons at the roadside.
School Travel Plans – Highlighting the excellent work taking place in local schools to develop these important documents that review how students travel to and from school in order to make this a safer, healthier and more pleasant experience.
Speed Management – How the team works as part of the Safety CameraPartnership to tackle problems linked to speeding traffic on our roads.
School run parking – Everyone know that the daily school run causes congestion, parking problems and danger for pupils and parents outside the school gates. The team is hoping to make motorists behave in more considerate and safe manner through improved awareness.
