From fun family activities to the magnificent Victorian winding engine, Bank Holiday adventures to fascinating exhibitions and even the brand new Winding House Film Club – the Museum has something for everyone! And what's more. . . it's all FREE!
Discover fabulous finds, mystery objects and curious costumes at the 'Dig and Discover!" week from Tuesday 26th – Friday 29th July . Held as part of the Festival of British Archaeology, these hands-on history and archaeology adventures take place from 10am-5pm.The historic winding engine will also run on Friday 29th at 12pm and 3pm.
Exciting and new this year, for the young and the young at heart, …. our very own Winding House Film Club!
Every other Saturday afternoon throughout the summer holidays the Winding House will be showing a FREE classic family film to tie in with its new exhibition on the golden era of entertainment, The Pictures and 'the 'Stute' – Nights out in the Valleys.
Films will be shown at 2pm on Saturday 23rd July ("Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"), Saturday 6th August ("One of our Dinosaurs is Missing") and Saturday 20th August ("Treasure Island").
The film fun continues until May 2012, with a different well-loved family film each month! Booking is essential for this fantastic new event - for more information and to book your place, contact the Winding House on 01443 822 666.
This summer, you're also invited to "A Month of Fun Days". Come along each Thursday afternoon in August for some intriguing Roman, Medieval and Wartime puzzles, crafts, games and activities for families of all ages. There's no need to book– just drop in and join the fun between 2pm and 4pm on 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th August!
On your visit, why not sit back and relax with some delicious tea, coffee and traditional cakes in the Coffee Shop with its fantastic views of the surrounding valley?
Making a welcome return this year is "My Museum!", a special week of events for young people, aged 9-14 years. Budding curators can take control of the Winding House from 15th –19th August and discover how museums look after their collections. They'll pick which objects go on display for all visitors to see – and decide how to display them! Advance booking is essential for this popular and innovative event.
And why not round off the holidays by stepping back in time on the Bank Holiday at the Miner's Monday event on 29th August? From coalmines to pastimes, washdays to pay days, discover life for a Victorian miner's family. The event runs from 10am-5pm and the historic winding engine will run at 12pm and 3pm.
With a fantastic, packed events programme, our fun, hands-on gallery on the history of Caerphilly County Borough, the spectacular historic winding engine – not to mention our fabulously entertaining new exhibition, The Pictures and "the 'Stute" - Nights out in the Valleys – there's lots to explore and enjoy at the Winding House this summer - And remember, it's all FREE!
