As retirement age approaches, most people plan to take life easy and look forward to leaving the pressures of the working world behind them.

Not so for one ambitious woman from Nelson who has decided to embark on a new career path at the age of sixty.

Jan Nelson has set up her own photography business with help from a Start-Up Grant from Caerphilly county borough council. She offers a range of photographic services including weddings, portraits, nature, concerts, press & PR and charity events.

Jan's previous jobs included working as a chiropodist in Nelson and in custodial and security employment, but as she approached 60 she decided that she would like a new challenge and turned her photography hobby into a business opportunity. Although she is now mainly based at her studio in High Street, Nelson, she also spends a lot of time at Brean in Somerset.

Cllr Tudor Davies, CCBC cabinet member for regeneration said, "Well done to Jan for setting an example to us all by proving that older people can still make a contribution to the modern business world. We were delighted to offerJan a helping hand in the form of a grant to get the business off the ground."
