Get set for the Great Cheese Race!

The countdown has started to this year's Big Cheese Festival in Caerphilly and local people of all ages are being encouraged to sign up to take part in the 'Great Cheese Race' which helps kick off the weekend's festivities.

The Cheese Race is a light-hearted run involving teams of 4 people in fancy dress running around the grounds of Caerphilly Castle carrying a truckle of Caerphilly Cheese on a wooden stretcher.

The race takes place at 6.30pm on Friday 24th July and signals the start of the popular Big Cheese Weekend (Sat 25th – Sun 26th). The festival is the highlight of Caerphilly county borough council's summer events programme and regularly attracts 80,000+ visitors to Caerphilly town centre for a weekend of fun and sunshine.

There will be prizes for the winners of the Cheese Race and for the best dressed teams. Adult team members must be aged 16 or over. Junior entrants must be aged between 8 and 15.

For an entry form, please contact the CCBC tourism unit by e-mailing tourism@caerphilly.gov.uk or calling 01443 864261.

The Big Cheese is an extravaganza of street entertainers, living history encampments, music, dance, traditional funfair, folk dancing, falconry, fire eating, minstrels, troubadours and much more.
