Caerphilly school children are to benefit from a brand new school that will support learning in the 21st Century, after Cabinet gave the scheme the green light this week (28th June 2011).
Cabinet considered a report, which sought their approval to proceed with the construction of a brand new replacement primary school on the site of Cwm Ifor Primary School in Penyrheol, Caerphilly.
The £6million project will come to fruition thanks to grant funding from the Welsh Government totalling £4.04million, with the remaining funding coming from Caerphilly County Borough Council.
Cllr Allan Pritchard, Leader of the Council said, "I am delighted that Cabinet have given this excellent scheme the green light. This brand new school building will provide a wonderful learning environment for our youngsters, in fit for purpose facilities for the 21st Century".
Cllr Phil Bevan, Cabinet Member for Education, Leisure and Lifelong Learning said, "This project forms part of our wider commitment to providing first class educational facilities for generations to come, and I greatly look forward to seeing this project come to life over the coming months".
Following funding being granted for the project, officers from Caerphilly County Borough Council worked in partnership with colleagues from the WLGA and Architype, a private company, in developing an innovative and exemplar design based upon the evolving 21st Century Schools standard. The resultant impressive design is very much learner-orientated, with a greater emphasis upon informal learning areas and the elimination of traditional corridor spaces.
The current Cwm Ifor Primary School building was built in the 1950's and is a sprawling site with an end-to-end distance of 226.5m.
The brand new Cwm Ifor Primary School looks set for completion ready for pupils to move into at the beginning of the 2012/13 academic year.
