The Mayor and Leader of Caerphilly county borough council have sent a joint message of support to boxing hero Joe Calzaghe as he prepares for his big fight in New York this weekend.

The Mayor, Cllr Anne Collins, and the Leader of council, Cllr Lindsay Whittle, are backing the Newbridge-based boxer as he heads to Madison Square Garden for his showdown with Roy Jones Jnr.

In a joint letter of support they wrote, "On behalf of the citizens of the Caerphilly county borough, it gives us great pleasure to send you our warmest greetings and support for your forthcoming fight. We understand this maybe your last and we wanted you to know how proud the local residents are of your boxing achievements.

The people of Newbridge hold you very dear to their hearts and when you walk into that arena, we know the people of Wales and especially those residing in our county borough will be cheering loudly their support for you on Saturday night."

Joe is a sporting ambassador for the whole country and has never lost a fight in his professional career with 45 wins and 32 knock outs.
