Green fingered pupils at Ynysddu Primary School have been busy creating their very own gardening project.
The school has been able to develop a large plot in the community allotment opposite the school thanks to a £10,000 boost from the Community Focused Schools Grant.
When the bid for funding was successful, work began immediately to transform the overgrown plot into an attractive green space.
The pupils are already starting to see results thanks to the support of the neighbouring plot holders who have been helping out. In a matter of months the transformation has been impressive and the plot now boasts a polytunnel with raised flower beds, an outdoor classroom and an onsite shop where essential gardening supplies are sold, with the proceeds going towards maintaining the garden.
The efforts of the pupils and the community were recognised recently when they were recently presented with an Eco Schools Green Flag. The project has also attracted the attention of Communities First and Llanfawr Primary of Anglesey who are hoping to get involved in a similar project due to the outstanding success at Ynysddu.
The plot holders are attending an organic horticultural course through the University of Glamorgan, hosted by Ynysddu Primary, as a thank you for all their hard work.
