CCTV operator receives commendation for Blackwood drugs arrest

    25 April 2008

A Caerphilly County Borough Council CCTV operator is celebrating after being awarded a division commendation by Gwent Police.

The operator, who does not wish to be named, received his award on 23rd April from Chief Inspector Joanne Bull at the annual Gwent Police Divisional Commendation Ceremony. The CCTV operator received the award for his diligence and swiftness in carrying out his work, which lead to the identification and arrest of an individual who was supplying drugs in Blackwood town centre.

The operator said, "From observing the CCTV camera images in the control room, I noted three individuals acting suspiciously. They appeared to be passing a bag filled with a white powdery substance around the group opposite Wetherspoons pub on Blackwood High Street. I telephoned through to Gwent Police headquarters to report my suspicions, and within minutes police officers were on the scene, and arrested the individuals.

I was simply doing my job, but it is nice for this to be recognised by Gwent Police. This now totals three commendations for the staff at the CCTV control room."

Howard Rees, Community Safety Manager said, "This commendation is thoroughly deserved and clearly illustrates partnership working at its best. CCTV is helping in the fight against crime and anti social behaviour in the local area. Not only does it provide good evidence, it's good for the public too, in our attempts to significantly decrease the fear of crime throughout the county borough. We're not just looking for villains, but looking out for the public as well."
