>Three popular parks in the Caerphilly county borough have been awarded a prestigious 'Green Flag' making them some of the best in the country – and that's official!
Morgan Jones Park in Caerphilly, Waunfawr Park in Crosskeys and Nelson Wern Park have all received the Green Flag Award, a sign to visitors that the park is well-maintained and well-managed, with excellent facilities.
"We are delighted that our parks and green spaces have once again been recognised as places of excellence by the Green Flag assessors," said, Cllr Allan Pritchard, Leader of Council. "A lot of effort is made to ensure a high levels of standard is maintained in all our parks and we are very proud of the facilities on offer for our local residents. I'd like to congratulate all concerned for this impressive achievement".
The three parks are part of a record number of sites receiving the Green Flag Award this year, ensuring that even more of us now have access to well-managed, high-quality green spaces.
Environmental improvements in a community garden in Oakdale have also been recognised with a Green Pennant award. Green Pennant Awards, which are part of the Green Flag Award scheme, recognise and reward the best community-run parks in the country.
In 2011, 1,288 parks and green spaces will fly either the Green Flag or Community Award, a sign that the value of green space is widely acknowledged as vital to our communities.
Phil Barton, Green Flag Plus Partnership chairman said: "I would like to congratulate this year's winners, who have worked hard throughout the year to keep their parks and green spaces at a high standard and ensure they are pleasant and enjoyable spaces for the whole community."
All award-winning sites now have the chance to receive a further award from the Green Flag Plus Partnership, the People's Choice Award. This award is voted for by the public, so if you want to see your local park receive a national accolade as the people's choice, then visit the Green Flag Award website now to register your vote.
