Boxing hero Joe Calzaghe has become the first ever recipient of the 'Freedom of the Caerphilly county borough'.

The Newbridge based sporting legend was granted the prestigious title at a special ceremony held in the council Chamber at Penallta House, Ystrad Mynach.

The Freedom of the Borough is the highest accolade that the council can grant and is awarded for outstanding services to, or achievement associated with, the Caerphilly county borough – criteria that Joe Calzaghe undoubtedly satisfies. Joe was nominated by Cllr Allan Pritchard with unanimous support from all councillors.

"Being the first person to receive this award is a great honour and it has totally blown me away," said Joe. "The scroll will take pride of place in my home and I would like to thank the council from the bottom of my heart for recognising me in this way."

Joe Calzaghe is a great ambassador for the area through a career that has made him known worldwide as a boxing legend, as well as his commendable charity work. His contributions were also acknowledged with the awarding of an MBE, followed by a CBE in the 2008 Queen's Birthday Honours.

Mayor, Cllr John Evans said, "Joe is an extremely worthy recipient of this prestigious honour. Not only is this down to his outstanding achievements within the boxing ring and his charity work, but also the way in which he is an excellent role model for so many youngsters."
