Youngsters enjoy a taste of the great outdoors

    03 June 2008

Young people in Maesycwmmer had a wild night out recently when they took part in a special outdoor activity event involving Swansea-based company Dynamix.

The youngsters from Maesycwmmer Youth Centre, which is part of Caerphilly County Borough Council's Youth Service, foraged for firewood, cooked their food over an open fire pit and then enjoyed some exciting open air activities.

Maesycwmmer Community Council kindly funded the event, which took place at Cydcoed Woods, following a recent redevelopment initiative.

The dry, warm evening provided perfect weather for the barbecue and staff from Dynamix taught the youngsters how to use a fire pit for cooking, following a successful forage for firewood by the young people themselves.

The group made skewers to cook marshmallows, before using the fire pit to heat water for hot drinks and popcorn. Whilst not on cooking duties, the young people enjoyed a lesson in circus activities such as spinning plates and Diablos.

To finish off the evening, the group were given the opportunity to express their opinions about the woodland renovations and share their ideas for future use of the space.

Area Community Education Manager, Nikki Gethfield, said, "Maesycwmmer Youth Workers thoroughly enjoyed the evening and on behalf of my colleagues I would like to thank both the young people and Dynamix for a pleasant, positive evening."
