Adult learners, tutors and community centre managers recently came together for a special "Celebration of Achievement" evening at Llancaiach Fawr.
The event recognised adult learner and tutor achievements in community education throughout the Caerphilly county borough, and was also an opportunity for Caerphilly County Borough Council to show their appreciation of community centre's management committees by recognising long service to their communities.
Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr John Evans joined the friends and family of those nominated for awards to be entertained by pupils of St Martins Comprehensive School, who gave a polished instrumental performance before the presentations.
There was also the opportunity for guests to view the profiles of the learners and tutors nominated for awards and see an excellent display of their work.
Tutors and learners from across the county borough had the opportunity to nominate each other for an award, and a total of 64 nominations were received. After careful deliberation, the nominees were narrowed down to 14 deserving winners; six tutors and eight learners. There were also two class awards, which were presented to Pontlottyn Art Class and the Classroom Teaching Assistants Course.
CCBC frontline staff Ann Jones and Debra Kemp both received awards for excellent customer service. Mrs Ann Owen received a special recognition award for 40 years service to the community, and 19 community centre managers received awards for long service.
Adult Education tutor, Janet Walters was presented with a "Special Achievement Award" and a bouquet for 25 years service, also for her commitment to teaching community education classes and being an inspiration to her learners.
The evening was expertly compared by world-renowned opera singer, Beverley Humphries, who also presented the awards assisted by the Assistant Director for Communities and Leisure Services, Peter Gomer.
Mr Gomer said, "Congratulations to everyone who took part in the award ceremony, and thanks to everyone who made the nominations. This year over 16,000 learners enrolled on community education courses as diverse as IT qualifications to creative writing or had opportunities to learn a language or GCSE maths."
The awards evening is organised by CCBC's Community Education department to coincide with Adult Learners Week, which promotes learning in the community across Wales. For more information about Adult Education classes, please contact 01443 863 238.
