As Caerphilly county borough council consults on its proposals for the budget for 2012/13 , a report sets out how well placed the council is to continue weathering the recession storm.
During the last twelve months it has maintained its course for prudent management of its Medium Term Financial Plan resulting in a second year with zero council tax rise.
How have we achieved this? Residents asked Cllr Colin Mann Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Financial Resources and he was happy to respond "We have had tremendous support from employees across the authority making every effort to reduce the cost of delivering services and maintain quality frontline services and we have achieved savings of £17 million in three years. My colleagues in the cabinet have worked hard to make the savings in their own service areas and divert money to where it is most needed and effective."
Cllr Allan Pritchard Leader of the council said " The revenue budget is being well managed which has allowed us to move money into three key developments this past year and now we are looking forward to a further three substantial programmes being brought forward. I draw attention particularly to the way we have bucked the national trend and opened new libraries and service centres in Risca and Bargoed, the multi million pound developments in the heart of the towns are making significant impact on local residents where visitor numbers have doubled.
Cllr Ron Davies Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning said "Preparation for two new schemes have been outlined in the last week – Sports Centre of Excellence and Community Development in Ystrad Mynach and Phase 2 of the Bargoed regeneration project featuring a multiplex cinema to compliment the Morrison retail development. Both these projects offer good employment prospects during construction and will on completion bring new jobs opportunities to the county borough.
