Zoe Matthews, Schools' Young Contemporary Musician of the Year 2007

Young musicians from across the Caerphilly County Borough battled it out on the weekend to claim the title of Schools' Young Contemporary Musician of the Year 2007.

The overall winner was vocalist Zoe Matthews, a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni. The Mayor, Cllr Allen Williams, presented the trophy to Zoe at the event. She also received a cheque for £150, as will her school.

The event took place at Caerphilly Music Service on Saturday 24th November. Throughout the day the pupils competed in preliminary rounds before progressing to the finals. The winners of the various categories were:

  • Guitar - Alex Haines (Cwmcarn High School)
  • Bass Guitar - Greig Halliday (Lewis School, Pengam)
  • Drums - Lloyd Haines (Cwmcarn High School)
  • Singing - Zoe Matthews (Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni)
  • Composition - Michael Newman (Lewis School, Pengam)
  • The five winners each received a cheque for £50 for themselves and another for their respective schools.

The adjudicator, Ann Cleaton, commented on the very high standard of musical performance in the Competition.

Most people are familiar with the annual 'Young Musician of the Year' competition, but the ‘Contemporary Young Musician of the Year’ is an alternative annual event which is organised in response to the increasing demand for tuition in guitar, drums and vocals in local schools.
