The current economic downturn is having an impact on everyone and Caerphilly county borough is keen to show that it too is tightening its belt and reducing unnecessary spending.
The Big Cheese Festival takes place in Caerphilly next week and in past years the council has entertained VIPs and event sponsors at a special reception held on the opening evening.
This year, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce spending, council officials have agreed to hold a special 'credit crunch supper' consisting of soup, bread and cheese for the sponsors. They will also be asked to sing for their supper and raise funds for the Mayor's Charity Appeal along with the local Youth Forum who are taking part in the Great Cheese Race.
However, these spending cuts will not affect plans to give 500 children with special needs from across the county borough a special treat. They will still be given a special VIP afternoon of free rides on the huge funfair as in previous years, with support from Lindsay Ford Solicitors.
Council leader, Cllr Lindsay Whittle, said, "We normally host a reception for the sponsors on the opening evening as a thank you for their valued support, but this year we feel we should hold a more modest function in light of the current economic climate.
We are delighted that Lindsay Ford Solicitors are sponsoring 500 special needs children to an afternoon of fun at the Big Cheese. I and the Mayor will be thrilled to join the children and their families in the afternoon while they have a fantastic time."
This year's Big Cheese has once again attracted sponsorship from the private sector together with grants from Europe and the Assembly.
