It has been a month since Caerphilly County Borough Council introduced its brand new enforcement initiative "Pick Up or Pay Up", and during that time, there have been some pleasing results.
CCBC's Environmental Health Enforcement Officers and Community Safety Wardens have been working tirelessly, to help highlight the local authority's commitment to making the local environment an even more pleasant place to live, work and visit.
Since the initiative was launched almost a month ago, the following enforcement action has been taken:
- A total of 26 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN's) of £75 issued – 19 of these were for littering, 5 for disposing of cigarette butts on the ground and 2 for dog fouling.
- 146 warnings/interventions issued for littering and dog fouling
- 45 poop a scoops issued
- 30 stubbies issued – these provide a place for cigarette butts to be disposed of, without having to dispose of them on the ground
A brand new 24-hour hotline has also been launched, specifically for the reporting of littering and dog fouling in the county borough: 01443 866 566 – local residents are urged to make use of this number which goes through to council enforcement officers, who will then take action accordingly.
In addition, enforcement officers have also visited a number of schools, colleges, shops and pubs throughout the local area, informing people of their social responsibilities surrounding dog fouling and littering, as well as the hard-hitting health implications that dog mess can have, should it be ingested.
The initiative, which has so far been primarily focussed to the Crosskeys and Risca areas, will now be rolled out to many other areas of the borough, with a littering and dog-fouling blitz of Bargoed scheduled for the beginning of December. Other larger towns and their surrounding areas will also be targeted as part of the initiative.
Cabinet member for the environment, Cllr Lyn Ackerman said, "The vast majority of our residents take their environmental responsibilities seriously, but there are still a small minority who do not cooperate, and still feel it is acceptable to drop litter and not pick up their dogs mess.
The "Pick Up or Pay Up" campaign illustrates Caerphilly county borough council's commitment to taking a tough stance on the issues of dog fouling and littering, and these excellent results from our enforcement teams so far, reinforces this. Through this initiative, we hope to continue to highlight our determination to further improve our environment for both residents and visitors alike."
