Dedicated adult education tutor, Judith Archer has been named Wales Tutor of the Year in the Inspire Adult Tutor and Mentor Awards 2009. Judith also received the Basic Skills Tutor of the Year Award at a special ceremony held at Llanhilleth Miners Institute. The ceremony, organised by NIACE Dysgu Cymru, recognised the commitment, knowledge and communication skills of tutors and mentors who inspire adult learners every day across Wales.
Judith, who works for the council's Directorate of Education and Leisure teaching basic skills to adults, was credited with restoring learners' confidence and improving their life chances both professionally and socially. Judith was also praised for her patience and understanding, as well as her wealth of knowledge in English and Mathematics
Her students said, "Judith makes us feel special, she makes her classes fun and interesting" adding that she has the ability to coax out the best in all her students, and has helped them to overcome learning barriers to not only improve the quality of their life, but has inspired them to continue learning.
On receiving both the awards, Judith said, "Working with adults with basic skills needs is one of the most satisfying areas in teaching. Adult learners are enthusiastic and willing to learn. They often have a lot more skills and experiences to offer than they realise. Once you have gained someone's trust you can work with them and encourage them to participate in class activities without fear of embarrassment. This is when you see individuals grow and develop. It's very satisfying hearing a non-reader read for the first time. It is also rewarding when students tell you, how they are using the skills you've taught them, to improve their everyday lives."
