Blackwood Comprehensive students will represent Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen in the Young Enterprise Wales Innovation Awards on June 18th after winning the local event at Bedwellty House recently.
The Nucleus team from the Caerphilly county borough school wowed judges with their entrepreneurial expertise and beat out the competition during the Young Enterprise Local Final Event, with their innovative invention the "Hugga Plug", which protects your phone when it is charging.
Mr Ravi Pawar, Head teacher of Blackwood Comprehensive, commented, "We are all very proud of the culture of 'enterprise' which has been a feature of the school for many years. This year's team, 'Nucleus', is outstanding and they have created and produced a superb product - I have bought 4 Hugga Plugs already! We wish our team good luck in the final in Cardiff on June 18th".
The team will now compete against other teams from across Wales for the chance to compete at the UK Young Enterprise Innovation Awards in July. The event, to take place on the 18th June, will see teams from across Wales congregate at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.
Another Caerphilly county borough school, Trinity Fields, will also be representing Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen at the Welsh Awards. Their Secret Surprises team created a fantastic film about their experiences over the year, and won the Team Programme Award.
Acting Head of School at Trinity Fields, Tracey McGuirk added, "As a school we have worked hard to encourage and develop a whole school ethos of young enterprise. The recognition from the Young Enterprise Scheme has demonstrated the level of hard work and enthusiasm shown by both pupils and staff. We are proud to represent Caerphilly at the Welsh Awards and look forward to demonstrating the skills of our very talented pupils."
The Young Enterprise teams from across Wales, including the two creative Caerphilly teams will be competing for the coveted "Best Company" or "Best Team" award, which will take them on to the UK-wide Awards in July.
