A woman from Caerphilly county borough has been taken to court and ordered to pay a total of £300 for a cigarette littering offence.
Haley Walters, of Pandy Road, Bedwas was accused of disposing of a cigarette at Morgan Jones Park, Caerphilly on 29th February 2012.
She was initially issued with a fixed penalty notice, although through none payment of this fine, the case was pursued through the courts.
The case was heard recently at Abergavenny Magistrates Court; the defendant did not attend court therefore the case was proven in her absence.
Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said, "Littering in any form is an offence, whether it's throwing a cigarette, or discarding chewing gum and food wrappers onto the floor. We are determined that the small minority who feel it is acceptable to behave in this way and adversely impact upon our environment with this unsightly litter will not get away with it".
He continued, "We would like to remind people that anyone who fails to show environmental responsibility, through behaviour such as littering, face serious fines. The message is simple – pick up or pay up."
