Two attractive country parks in the Caerphilly county borough have been awarded prestigious Green Flags, it has been announced today (Tuesday 17th July).

The popular Parc Cwm Darren near Deri and Cwmcarn Forest are the latest sites in the Caerphilly area to win the much sought-after accolade.

Representatives from the council will receive the awards from John Griffiths AM, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd on July 23rd.

Cllr Ken James, CCBC Cabinet Member welcomed the news, "We are delighted that Parc Cwm Darran and Cwmcarn Forest are the latest attractions to receive this prestigious green award. This helps highlight the fantastic open spaces we have here in the county borough. We now look forward to receiving the honour at this year's Royal Welsh."

Three local parks already have a Green Flag - Morgan Jones Park in Caerphilly, Waunfawr Park in Crosskeys and Nelson Wern Park - but these are the first country parks to receive the award, which is a sign to visitors that the site is well-maintained and well-managed, with excellent facilities.

Cwm Darren Country Park boasts a beautiful lake, a visitor centre, healthy walking routes, waymarked trails, cycle routes, picnic areas and a seasonal campsite. The site also offers new touch screen interactive information games for visitors.

Cwmcarn Forest offers something for all the family. The visitor centre is open daily as is Raven's cafe, with a gift shop and information station. There is an attractive lake and campsite as well as picnic and BBQ areas. Mountain bikers can tackle the fearsome Twrch and Y Mynydd mountain bike trails. Motorists can cruise along the seven miles of Cwmcarn Forest Drive boasting a stunning sequence of views.

Over three-quarters of the Caerphilly county borough is countryside. The council's Countryside and Landscape Service helps to look after these popular open spaces through landscape improvements, creating new habitats, ensuring trees are safe, monitoring and protecting wildlife and improving access.
