>Staff from across Caerphilly County Borough Council have been working hard to achieve a qualification to benefit older people and people with disabilities.
The EXTEND qualification enables staff to run gentle exercise classes for residents, tenants and people attending day centres who want to participate. The course involved attending at a variety of lectures and workshops to develop a basic understanding and knowledge of the body, how to use music and rhythm together with communication styles and teaching techniques.
This has been a lot of hard work and commitment for the staff. Training is spread out over a number of months with the staff having to complete their own portfolio and both practical and theoretical exams.
Albert Heaney, Corporate Director Social Services praised the staff for completing the qualification and said, "Physical activity is a good way of positively influencing health, it's enjoyable, sociable, a good way of keeping happy and can improve balance, strength and co-ordination. Residents will be able to join in this group activity knowing they are being taught by a qualified instructor who can adapt exercise to the individual".
Six staff from Social Services Residential and Daycare and three Wardens at Sheltered Housing Schemes attended their final training session and received their certificates recently.
