Sport Caerphilly and Blackwood Comprehensive's PE department are building a team of budding athletes, by inspiring and encouraging SEN pupils to participate in mainstream sports and activities.
One pupil, whose overwhelming journey is seen as an inspiration to his peers and teachers alike, is Scott Weetman, who has shown dedication to sport through PE lessons, 5x60 clubs and extra curricular activities.
When Scott joined Blackwood Comprehensive as a quiet year 7 pupil, with limited social, speech, and language skills, autism and epilepsy, he spent his lunchtimes with his support workers and his head of year.
Three years on, Scott's confidence has grown massively and his social skills have improved by taking part and often competing in a varied number of sports including football, rugby, basketball, table tennis, kayaking and swimming. Accepted by his team mates and the other pupils in his year group, Scott is now a secure and inspirational sportsman.
Cllr Rhianon Passmore, Caerphilly County Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning commented, "Our schools are responsible for moulding children and young people into the people that they will be in the future. I am so pleased that, with the assistance of Sport Caerphilly, Blackwood Comprehensive School is inspiring young people with sensory needs to reach their potential, and giving them all the opportunities they deserve."
In addition to qualifying as a Level One Sports Leader, Scott has recently been awarded with the PE prize for contribution to extra curricular sport at the school's special prize giving ceremony.
Cllr Dave Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, added, "Scott's story shows that sport plays an important part in building confidence and teaching life skills. I hope that through Sport Caerphilly a new generation of young people will become 'Hooked on Sport for Life'."
