>Elite cyclists from across the world will speed through the streets of the Caerphilly county borough once again this year as details of the route for the 2012 Tour of Britain are announced today (Thursday 26th April).
"We are delighted that this prestigious international sporting event is coming back to the Caerphilly county borough in September," said CCBC Chief Executive Anthony O'Sullivan. "We hope to repeat the success of last year's race when residents turned out in their thousands to support the cyclists along the route."
The competitors enter the county borough near Nelson and speed down to the finishing line in Caerphilly town centre. Caerphilly Mountain is a key challenge in the final stages of the leg as the cyclists endure TWO steep climbs to the top before racing down to the finish line in the shadow of the magnificent castle.
"The exciting finale in Caerphilly was a major highlight of the whole Tour last year and helped showcase the fantastic attractions here in the county borough. This announcement closely follows the recent news that Caerphilly will also host the BBC Proms in the Park this year, so we have lots to celebrate at the moment," he added.
The Tour of Britain takes place across the UK between the 9th and 16th September. The Caerphilly stage of the event will take place on Friday 14th September and will see the cyclists race down the length of Wales from Welshpool to Caerphilly.
