20 June 2012
>Forget about all eyes being on UEFA Euro 2012, on Friday 15th June there was live action at Pontllanfraith Comprehensive 3G pitch with primary school children taking part in their very own football tournament!
Inspired by EURO 2012, 16 teams competed for the title and winning trophy all in one day. Participating schools were allocated European countries. Pupils were judged not only on their skills and ability to score goals, but also on their appearance as they were dressed in their national colours and outfits. Despite the mixed weather it certainly didn't seem to affect their football ability and scoring skills!!
Running along side the tournament outdoors, girls football took place indoors to help raise the profile of the New Pop in and Play sessions currently running at Newbridge Leisure Centre every Wednesday evening. The girls were able to improve their football with a skills session and technical practice in the morning, followed by a EURO 2012 tournament in the afternoon.
One pupil said "This has been a brilliant day and we have really enjoyed ourselves."
Representing Italy, Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Gwyddon claimed victory as the tournament winners and Penllwyn Primary, representing Germany won the best dressed.
