Parc Cwm Darran is to play host to an outdoor events area, as part of the culmination of works that have concentrated on the provision of improved interpretation and opportunities for outdoor events.
The central feature of the recent works is the creation of an outdoor events arena based on an amphitheatre design with a landscaped earth sculpture as the backdrop. The amphitheatre, which will be able to accommodate approximately 200 people, is constructed of wood, much of which has been locally sourced, whilst the earth sculpture has utilised materials from on the site.
The sculpture itself will take the form of a wild boar and is based upon the standard of the 20th Augustan Legion who were active in the area during the Roman invasion. As well as offering a unique outdoors event arena it ties in with the interpretation of other landscape and historic features of interest within and surrounding the Park.
Pat Mears, Head of Regeneration and Planning said, "The new amphitheatre will play host to cultural and educational events that will benefit the whole community. The further revitalisation will enhance the delights of this hidden wooded valley that culminates in a stunning sequence of views."
The visitor centre has been refurbished and revitalised with the provision of digital wallpaper and interactive games, accessed at two stations, telling the story of the Park and what it currently has to offer. Outside a children's play area has been created with further interpretation.
In order to complete these works Caerphilly CBC has worked closely with the Welsh Assembly to gain funding through the European Regional Development Fund for projects under the Valleys Regional Park (VRP) banner including support from the Valleys Hearts and Soul Campaign and Heads of the Valleys Initiative.
